The Freedom Low Back, In Detail

One size, and no size to choose. The Freedom sets its own recline resistance from your body weight, so the only things anyone adjusts are seat height and the arms. Black fabric is the common stock. We can reupholster in any colour if you want the chairs to match a scheme.

Inside the workshop: a chair stripped, rebuilt and rechecked.

Why refurbished

Why Choose a Refurbished Freedom

Humanscale built the Freedom to run for 15 years or more with almost no maintenance, so a five to seven year old chair is barely halfway through. Every chair is checked for authenticity first. If it is not genuine, or it does not meet our standard, it is recycled rather than sold.

  • Fully stripped and assessed: then rebuilt to specification, not just cleaned up
  • Mechanism tested under load: the recline is set by body weight, so it is tested with weight on it
  • Worn parts replaced: gas lifts, castors and arm pads as needed
  • Upholstery and frame deep cleaned: and moving parts lubricated
Choosing

Low Back or Headrest

The low back is the one for benched desks and open floors, because nothing sticks up above the desk line and you can see across the room. It is also the cheaper of the two. Take the headrest version if people recline while they read or take calls, because the head stays supported through the whole movement. The chair underneath is the same and so is the mechanism. Mixed orders are normal.

Before and after

A Freedom Low Back, Before and After Refurbishment

This is the same model as the chairs on this page, photographed on arrival and again after our workshop. It is what "refurbished" means when we say it.

Before Humanscale Freedom chair before refurbishment: worn seat fabric, collapsed foam, scuffed star base and castors
Seat fabric worn through and foam collapsed. Star base, castors and arm pads scuffed and tired. Frame and mechanism still sound.
After Refurbished Humanscale Freedom chair: new upholstery, new castors, new gas lift and arm pads, repainted star base
Re-upholstered seat and back. New castors, gas lift and arm pads. Star base repainted. Fully deep cleaned.

What we did

  • Re-upholstered the seat and back in new fabric
  • Fitted new castors and a new gas lift
  • Fitted new arm pads
  • Repainted the star base
  • Deep cleaned the whole chair
  • Tested the mechanism and every adjustment before it went back

What stayed

  • The original frame, mechanism and arm structure
  • The chair the user already knows how to set up
  • Everything that did not need replacing

What does refurbishing a Humanscale Freedom chair involve?

The frame and mechanism on a Freedom last for decades, so refurbishment replaces the parts that wear and keeps the rest. We fit new castors, a new gas lift and new arm pads, repaint the star base, re-upholster the seat and back and deep clean the whole chair. Every adjustment is tested before it goes back. The chair comes back to as-new condition with a 12-month warranty on the parts we replace, subject to our terms and conditions.

Used, Second Hand or Refurbished?

Most businesses searching for a used Humanscale Freedom are looking for something better than a traditional second-hand purchase. There is an important distinction, and it matters when you are furnishing a working office. Second hand means pre-owned and untouched. What we supply is refurbished: every chair is stripped, inspected, rebuilt to specification and quality-checked before it leaves us.

The chair happens to be pre-owned. The standard it arrives at is not. So if you are searching for a second hand Freedom to reduce costs, you are in the right place. What you will receive is considerably better than second hand.

★★★★★

Jess was a pleasure to deal with. Helped us pull together a package of refurbished office desks and chairs for our business in Scotland. The process was simple and delivery in 7 days. Any small hiccups were dealt with quickly and professionally which is all that can be asked for. Will be using these guys again - why would you not when the furniture is like new at a fraction of the new price.

Are your Freedom chairs genuine Humanscale?

Yes. We only supply authentic Humanscale chairs. Every chair is checked for authenticity during inspection, and anything that does not pass is recycled rather than resold.

Are refurbished Freedom chairs the same as second hand?

No. Second hand means pre-owned and untouched. Our Freedom chairs are professionally refurbished: stripped, inspected, rebuilt and quality-checked before they leave us. You receive a chair that performs like new, with a 12-month warranty on the parts we replace.

What warranty do you offer on refurbished Freedom chairs?

A 12-month warranty on the parts we replace during refurbishment, subject to our terms and conditions.

How does the self-adjusting recline work?

A counterbalance mechanism inside the chair is set by your own body weight. Lean back and it reclines smoothly, and it holds you wherever you stop. There is no tension dial to wind up, which is why the chair suits desks that different people use.

What is the difference between the low back and the headrest model?

The chair, the mechanism and the seat are the same. The low back stops at the shoulders, so nothing sits above the desk line on a benched floor, and it costs less. The headrest version supports the head through the recline and has its own page.

Can I have it with or without arms?

Both. Arms are height-adjustable with gel pads where fitted, and we stock armless chairs too. Tell us which you want and we will match it to stock.

What colours can I have?

Black fabric is the common stock and it is what most orders go out in. We can reupholster in any fabric and colour if you want the chairs to match a scheme, which is worth doing on a large order.

Do you deliver nationwide?

Yes. We deliver and install across the UK. Typical lead time is 10 working days depending on location and quantity.
